Dear Readers,
We hope that the start of your semester went off without a hitch!
This month’s General Member Meeting was a collaborative effort with a number of the other student groups! Shout out to the SAASC, SLASC, AANHPI SG, REFORMA, & SRJ for co-hosting a lively discussion.
Below are some highlights from our discussion:
We heard about some stand-out classes that students have immensely enjoyed taking including: Digital Preservation, Hyperlinked Library, Grant Writing, and Tech Tools: HTML & CSS.
Additionally, we talked about opportunities that students have found helpful during their studies. One student talked about how joining student groups and professional organizations helped them find community. Another student enjoyed attending conferences as it helped them connect with professionals in the field. This brought up the idea of setting up Informational Interviews.
Informational interviews are a way to hear about a professional’s experiences. Maybe you know a little about a job you might like to do or a company you might want to work for. Talking to professionals can help you discover what they enjoy about their jobs, related stressors, & what excites them about the future.
We also heard about students who’ve participated in mentorships and internships. A few of the mentorships out there include the APALA Mentoring Program, SAA Mentoring Program, and the ASIS&T SIG III Research Mentorship.
This jam-packed evening included a few recommended sources for finding jobs and internships. Useful job search engines include Government Jobs, Archives Gig, Handshake, and of course, the following professional association websites (ASIS&T, SAA, SLA, ALA, and others!) For internships, check out the iSchool database or look at the websites of business near you!
On a closing note, due to the fully virtual nature of the iSchool, our programs can feel a little lonely and overwhelming at times. Know that it can take some time to find your groove. Whether you're looking for a group to hang out with, a job field you’re truly interested in, or professors with your preferred teaching style(s) - don’t give up, you’re not alone in this journey!!!
If you would like to join the ASIS&T SC Executive Committee fill out this form, we’d love to have you join us this semester!
