Dear Readers,
Spring seems to be upon us!
Lots of events are coming up this semester from our parent organization as well as from our student chapter. We’re continuing our focus on health literacy as we welcome Evan Thornburg—a bioethicist and prominent educational TikToker—to talk about how misinformation, disinformation, and conspiracy theories threaten public health. This session is sure to be an engaging conversation that will give us even more to think about regarding today’s digital landscape and its effects on our population’s ability to engage with health information.
In other news, there are a few great opportunities currently open to ASIS&T Student Members. The Special Interest Group - International Information Issues (SIG-III) is opening their mentorship program to connect new researchers with established mentors. Our own Vice Chair, Ronna Del Rosario, completed this program this past year; successfully pairing up and gaining research experience in the health informatics realm (check out our blog to read about her experience!) Applications for this year are due Sunday, March 23rd and the form can be found on the iConnect portal.
If you’ve been working on a research project already, consider applying to present a poster at the 2025 Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. The submission deadline is April 9th, and further information can be found on the submission website.
Finally, the new U.S. West Chapter is hosting a hybrid (in person & online) workshop: Considering Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in AI Applications on May 6th. They are currently looking for submissions for:
Research/practice talk (up to 1500 words): this is for completed research or works-in-progress, incorporating empirical data and/or conceptual reflections.
Posters (500 words): where you can obtain feedback on early-stage work! And empirical results are not required.
If interested in presenting, fill out this form due March 10th.
Additionally, there are 4 student registration scholarships for non-members available! This scholarship requires a 300 word essay regarding your interest in the event; it covers the event registration and a year’s membership with ASIS&T.
We hope you’re having an illuminating semester so far and look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!
